Caleb Guillotte - River Road
(Deadeye Dick)

Lyrics

V1: There is a time and place for having it out,
And this one’s as good as any, as we’re likely to find.
You say you’re wasted and probably wrong,
As I just roll my head back and think of something smug to say…

C1: With “Wild Horses” playing on the radio,
Caught between a cold bottle, and a broken vow.
Driving the winding way to New Orleans on nothing more than hope,
And we just lost it all on the River Road.

V2: Your mother said that we’d never make it,
While we just laughed and tore away on somebody else’s dime.
The bars are blurring by like Christmas lights;
And every cheap hotel room is another fallen paradise…

C1:
We can’t find our way…

Bridge: Outside of Memphis we met a healer,
Who kindly called the tune when I used to dance.

V3: Using a phone outside a honky tonk,
Because I’m not sure if you’re passing out, or passing on.
I guess our past was always with us,
But I thought for sure we’d lose it tearing down those winding roads…

C1:
We can’t find our way…on the River Road

Story

I wrote River Road in 1998 when our band, Deadeye Dick had just come off of the road after a pretty busy couple of years touring the U.S. and Europe. One thing that struck me was the mythic allure New Orleans held for people all over the world, particularly young artistic types.

After almost every show, some person would come up to us and say they were moving to our fair city to write, paint, play music or just be “bohemian”.

I guess this song sprung from the notion that New Orleans is so otherworldly to so many that it may seem the perfect place to escape one’s life.
