(Barstool Logic)
Lyrics
As Fall was near dark days were changing
The smell of football in the air
St. Charles was alive with summer at its end
I looked at the sky, it seemed so clear
When we awoke she was upon us
Didn't leave much time to get away
When the levee broke, the water rose for days
Eight feet from Lakeview down Canal
Chorus:
Where you gonna go, whatcha gonna do now
However far you may roam,
I'm going back to New Orleans, there ain't no doubt about it
She's my city...and my home
And some went westward into Texas
Some went north to Tennessee
Some found themselves in Alexandria
Those who had so much now those in need.
Chorus:
Where you gonna go, whatcha gonna do now
However far you may roam,
I'm going back to New Orleans, there ain't no doubt about it
She's my city...and my home
Bridge:
It's times like these that make you wonder
What lies ahead on down the road
When I feel myself goin' under
I just close my eyes, and think of home
I know someday we'll all be together once
again
From Gentilly to The Riverbend
Telling tales of heartache and survival
And a love affair that never ends
Chorus:
Where you gonna go, whatcha gonna do now
However far you may roam,
I'm going back to New Orleans, there ain't no doubt about it
She's my city...and my home

Story
Where you gonna go? Whatcha gonna do? These were the two questions I was asked more times than I can count during my two week exhile to Alexandria. My answer was always the same, "I'm going back, there's no doubt about it." That's where the chorus of the song came from. The verses are basically an historic account of the days leading up to the storm through its aftermath based on what I saw and heard.
Only three days before I was looking forward to the end of a very hot summer and was at a pre-season Saints game at The Dome. The University area on St. Charles Ave. was abuzz with the return of the students, and the weather that Friday and Saturday belied what was to come. The next thing I knew I was listening to a lady on Fox News at Tulane Medical Center telling of the 17th St. Canal Levee breaking and how they could see whitecaps coming down Canal St. The next several days were spent frantically searching for family and friends and finding just how spread out everyone was.
What really struck me was how this thing affected everyone, from all backgrounds. It didn't see black or white or rich or poor. People who had everything, in an instant had nothing. With all of this weighing down on me, and like many, not knowing if I had a house or a business left, one of the few things things that gave me solace was to think of home and things as they were and as they could be again and hope that everyone would somehow find their way back. There's no place like New Orleans. It's always amazed me how much love people have for this city and how unwilling they are to let it go and ultimately that's why it WILL rise again. There ain't no doubt about it.
So where you gonna go and whatcha gonna do?
